With Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story currently burning up the Netflix chart, it’s little surprise that a third season has been fast-tracked.
As we reported last month, Murphy is set to bring us Monster: The Ed Gein Story. Charlie Hunnam, best known for his role in Sons of Anarchy, will play Gein, on of history’s most infamous serial killers.
Now, we have confirmation that the cast has bulked out considerably, with three actors of note joining the project.
Laurie Metcalf, known to genre fans for her scene stealing turn as Nancy Loomis in Scream 2, will play Gein’s fanatical mother Augusta. It is widely believed that Augusta’s devout Christianity and propensity for abusive behaviour escalated Gein’s slide into sadism. Given Metcalf’s knack for playing overbearing and unhinged characters, we can’t think of an actress better suited for the part.
Furthermore, we’re hearing that actors Tom Hollander and Olivia Williams have signed on to play Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville.
This gives us our first indication of where Monster season 3 is heading, suggesting it will not focus entirely on Ed Gein’s life and killing spree. It is well documented that Ed Gein’s crimes were the primary influence on author Robert Bloch when writing 1959’s bestseller Psycho.
The novel was subsequently adapted by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960, becoming one of cinema’s most influential horror films. Given that actors have been cast as Hitchcock and Reville, it seems obvious that Monster will at least partially explore the making of Psycho, perhaps to drive home just how influential Gein’s crimes have been to horror cinema.
