The world is still recovering from the news that Hayden Panettiere is no longer with us.
The beloved actress passed away on August 16th at the age of thirty-six.
Whilst there are still many questions regarding Panettiere’s sudden death, the wave of grief the news caused throughout the world is still palpable.
Upon her passing, it was reported that Panettiere had no projects in the works, thus making 2026’s Sleepwalker her final film.
However, a reliable source has let us know that Panettiere was being eyed for a potential return to the Scream series.
Having last been seen in 2023’s Scream VI, Panettiere was beloved by the horror community for the role of movie aficionado and FBI agent Kirby Reed.
Whilst the eighth Scream movie is still noted as being in early development, our source tells us that a draft of the script does exist. Sisters Nora and Lila Zuckerman have confirmed they are tasked with writing the sequel, but have refused to elaborate on what they have in store.
As per our info, the Zuckerman’s intended to include Panettiere’s character in a significant capacity, similar to that of Scream VI.
However, we’re now being told that Panettiere’s passing has thrown development into a tailspin, with a costly re-write now required.
Although this remains unconfirmed, the situation mirrors the production troubles encountered by Scream 7 in 2024. The entire script required a re-write following the firing of star Melissa Barrera; thus, Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott was instead made the movie’s lead.
Whilst Panettiere’s passing likely won’t require such drastic changes, it will still stall a production the studios are eager to fast-track.
A persistent rumour regarding Scream 8 is that it will take place in London, although plot details remain a mystery at this point.
So, with a costly rewrite in the pipeline, we’ll likely be waiting some time for a solid Scream 8 update.
Regardless, it remains tragic that the movie will be altered, erasing what would’ve undoubtedly been a dynamite role for Panettiere.
Scream fans have been vocal on social media about their hope that the eighth instalment honours Panettiere and her beloved character. Whilst we cannot confirm or deny that this will be the case, it seems only right that some kind of tribute be included.
Whilst it’s sad a Kirby Reed return must now be scrapped, hopefully we will see Panettiere’s Scream legacy honoured in the near future. But we sure will miss her.
