Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse Will be Shot in Black and White

Posted on: May 17th, 2018

After the immediate success and acclaim for The Witch in 2016, Robert Eggers became hot property in the horror world. The director is collaborating again with the popular A24 to release his next genre feature titled The Lighthouse, described as a fantasy-horror film.

Although specific details of the film have not yet been released, editor Louise Ford (The Witch) has said that The Lighthouse will be shot in black and white:

“It’s set in 1890, and we’re shooting on 35mm black and white stock, virtually unheard of nowadays. Most black and white movies are shot in colour, and then converted to black and white in post. The dailies look beautiful; it’s very exciting.”

It seems like the perfect choice for a film directed by Eggers and, with its chilling and stark atmosphere, The Witch too would have looked brilliant in black and white.

The Lighthouse follows an ageing lighthouse keeper and will be set in Nova Scotia. The film stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson and has a release date slated for 2019.
