Before his untimely death in 2017, master of the zombie flick George A. Romero was working on the final entry in his “Dead” franchise.
Entitled Twilight of the Dead, the project was set to conclude the series Romero began in 1968 with the classic Night of the Living Dead. This would be followed by a sequel roughly every 10 years, including Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead.
Romero was only able to complete a treatment for Twilight of the Dead prior to his passing, but now the project is set to roar back to life thanks to Roundtable Films. What’s more, the project has a star attached who’s very familiar with fighting zombies.
With Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati penning a script from Romero’s treatment, and Romero’s widow Suzanne producing, Twilight of the Dead has reportedly signed Milla Jovovich to star.
Known for her lead role in the long-running Resident Evil film franchise, Twilight of the Dead will mark Jovovich’s first zombie outing since 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Joining Jovovich on the cast roster is Betty Gabriel, known as a scream queen for her scene-stealing turns in Get Out, The Purge: Election Year, and Unfriended: Dark Web.
Further zombie movie royalty is aboard the project, with effects master Greg Nicotero set to provide the pivotal zombie and gore make-up. Nicotero is one third of industry heavyweight KNB Effects, and is best known for co-creating the seminal zombie series The Walking Dead.
Twilight of the Dead will take flight under the direction of Brad Anderson, and is set to “delve into the dark nature of humanity from the perspective of the last humans on earth who are caught between factions of the undead.”
Of the project, Anderson said the following in a statement:
“I see this film in the same way as successful post-apocalyptic thrillers such as I Am Legend, A Quiet Place, The Road, and The Last of Us — genre stories that are as emotional as they are intense. When I first read Twilight of The Dead I teared up at the end. Which is weird for a film of this type. But it has that kind of pull, that combo of horror and heartbreak that I love.”
It is currently unknown when Twilight of the Dead will enter production, and a release date has not been issued as of this writing. We’ll let you know as soon as that changes.
