The hype for the fourth instalment in Universal’s immensely popular Mummy series is palpable, despite the release date being over two years away.
With directing duo Radio Silence slated to tackle the latest instalment, and returning stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz locked in, fans are desperate for a hint of what’s in store.
Now, we have our first nugget of information from Radio Silence.
As is well known, 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor did not feature actress Rachel Weisz. Citing scheduling conflicts and displeasure with the script, Weisz opted not to return as Evie O’Connell. Instead, Maria Bello took over the role, and it is widely agreed that Weisz’s absence resulted in the film being considered the weakest of the series.
So, fans have been curious how the newest film will handle the events of the third film, now Weisz has returned.
Well, filmmakers Radio Silence have heavily hinted that their movie will erase Tomb of the Dragon Emperor from the canon. Speaking recently, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin said:
“Well, Rachel is in this one, that should answer the question for you.”
Speaking of the script penned by Dave Coggeshall, co-director Tyler Gillett stated:
“I don’t think Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it’s a good script. It’s gonna be fun to make.”
So, it seems Radio Silence is planning a true return to form for The Mummy series, which will undoubtedly pull fans in.
The as-yet-untitled Mummy sequel is set to hit screens on May 19th 2028. Stay tuned and we’ll bring you any further updates as soon as we can.
