It’s been twelve years since MGM last attempted a reboot of their legendary Robocop IP.
The iconic character’s return was considered lacklustre, failing to turn a profit despite a massive promotional push. Sequel plans were quickly nixed, and since then Robocop has remained out of action.
Now, official sources are reporting that Amazon MGM have ordered an 8-episode Robocop series for Prime Video. As per reports, the project has been in development since the Amazon MGM merger in 2022. Robocop is allegedly one of the MGM IP’s Amazon were eager to get their hands on, feeling it held great potential for profitability.
The new series will be produced by James Wan through his Blumhouse Atomic Monster label. This will mark Wan’s first solo series as a producer since the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster merger.
Peter Ocko, best known for his work on The Office and Pushing Daisies, will act as showrunner and primary writer.
Robocop co-creator Ed Neumeier has also been confirmed as an executive producer on the show.
As per an official logline:
“A giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.”
Sounds familiar, huh?
In a statement, executive producer James Wan said of the new series:
“I’ve been a massive fan of Robocop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream. What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent. With Peter’s distinctive vision and bold approach to storytelling, and alongside Ed and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, we’re working to honour what made the original iconic and highlight its relevancy in this modern, tech-driven world, while building something unmistakably new for a global audience.”
There is currently no news on casting or when we can expect this new Robocop chapter to debut.
