PREQUEL TO CULT CLASSIC “SESSION 9” IN THE WORKS

Posted on: September 24th, 2026

This past August marked the 25th anniversary of Brad Anderson’s cult psychological horror film Session 9.

Although a financial flop at the time, Session 9 has gone on to garner considerable acclaim in the years since.

Praised for its atmosphere, strong performances, and unapologetically dark story, Session 9 has gone on to achieve cult classic status via home media and strong word-of-mouth.

The movie details a team of construction workers tasked with removing asbestos laden pipes from an abandoned psychiatric hospital. Things take a dark turn when one crew member uncovers nine session tapes with a young woman named Mary and her doctor. Each tape reveals a new personality within Mary, leading up to the malevolent “Simon,” who allegedly drove Mary to kill her family. However, what connection do these tapes have with the crew members beginning to disappear one-by-one?

Given Session 9’s reappraisal over the years, creator Brad Anderson has quite often been asked about a sequel. Now, the filmmaker has confirmed another movie is indeed in the works!

Whilst attending a 25th Anniversary screening of the film, Anderson confirmed that a prequel entitled Session 1 was in development. Anderson made the revelation during a Q&A, saying:
“What about another one? Would that be of interest? To see a movie that’s about the origin story? “So, we’ve been toying with this for a while. But we have a pitch for a movie that’s sort of a prequel to [Session 9]. It’s called Session 1. It’s really about the origin story of Mary Hobbes, the young girl in the movie… the woman who has the multiple personality disorder.”

Anderson continued:
“It’s about her life, growing up in the late ’60s in Boston, and what happened to her and how she got possessed. And how she killed her family. I’m saying that because we’re trying to get that movie off the ground and we think there’s an audience for that.”

An interesting concept, indeed!

Although the project is likely in very early development, Anderson reiterated that his intention bringing up the concept was to draw attention. Hopefully the recent anniversary buzz is enough to entice an eager investor or two towards Session 1.

We’ll keep an eye on this one and bring you any further developments as soon as we can.
