Prolific actor and horror genre regular Gerrit Graham has died.
Graham was born on November 27th 1948 in New York City. His family would move between Missouri and Michigan before settling in Chicago.
Returning to New York, Graham would study at Columbia University. Despite not studying theatre, Graham became head of the Columbia Players Theatre Group, and struck up a friendship with aspiring filmmaker Brian De Palma. Graham’s preoccupation with performance eventually led to his dropping out of the school.
Graham began is on-screen career collaborating with De Palma, their first joint venture being 1968’s black comedy Greetings. They’d collaborate again in 1970’s Hi Mom, and would remain lifelong friends.
1972’s Beware! The Blob would mark Graham’s first genre appearance, and would quickly be followed up by one of his most iconic roles. 1974’s Phantom of the Paradise would see Graham collaborate with De Palma again. The punk-rock re-telling of the classic Phantom of the Opera starred Graham as Beef, the miscast star of a doomed musical. The role saw Graham flex his impressive musical talents, and remains a project for which he is best remembered.
Throughout the 1970s, Graham’s career remained prolific, with roles in the likes of Demon Seed, Pretty Baby, and De Palma’s comedy Home Movies.
Graham’s feature output slowed slightly in the 80s, however he still appeared prominently in cult classics like National Lampoon’s Class Reunion, 1986’s Chopping Mall and TerrorVision, and 1987’s Island of the Alive.
Later film roles included 1991’s Child’s Play 2, voice work on Disney’s The Little Mermaid, and 1994’s My Girl 2.
Equally prolific on television, Graham had regular roles on the likes of 1979’s Just Friends and the sitcom Parker Lewis Can’t Lose. The actor also guest starred on juggernauts like Dallas, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Now and Again. In addition to physical television appearances, Graham provided voice work on the likes of The Critic, The Pink Panther, and Gargoyles.
Graham stepped away from regular performing in recent years, as his health had begun to decline. However, the actor still made semi-regular appearances on the convention circuit and happily gave interviews about his impressive resume.
Gerrit Graham died on September 22nd 2026 via complications from a long-standing lung disease. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Deborah Cooper and their two children Jack and Henry. He was 77-years-old.
