Actor Reggie Bannister, best known for his role in the Phantasm franchise, has died.
Born Reginald Horace Bannister on September 29th 1945, Bannister was a California resident his entire lifetime.
Little is known about Bannister’s early life, but Bannister has been vocal about growing up in a very musical environment. This would colour his later choices, as Bannister would release six albums spanning varying genre’s including rock, blues, and jazz.
In the late 1960s, Bannister was drafted by the US Military, and would serve in the Vietnam war, despite his vehement opposition of the conflict. Ultimately, Bannister’s time in the military would cause life-long hearing damage.
In 1976, Bannister would make his screen debut in Don Coscarelli’s comedy feature Kenny & Co. The film would spur a lifelong friendship, and see Bannister collaborate with Coscarelli on each of his projects.
Next, Coscarelli and Bannister would work together on Jim and the World’s Greatest. The movie was released by Universal Pictures, and saw Coscarelli become the youngest director in history to have a feature released by a major studio.
1979’s Phantasm would see Bannister land his most iconic character in Coscarelli’s cult-classic sci-fi horror. Bannister would reprise his role as Reggie the Ice Cream Man in each of Phantasm’s four sequels, ending with 2016’s Phantasm: Ravager.
Bannister would remain inactive in the film industry until 1987’s Phantasm II, but would then begin regularly appearing in genre fare.
His horror appearances outside of the Phantasm series include 1990’s Silent Night, Deadly Night 4, 1995’s The Demolitionist, 1997’s Wishmaster, and 2005’s The Mangler: Reborn.
Since 1993, Bannister would be a regular on the horror convention circuit, earning him the nickname “The Hardest Working Man in Horror.”
Bannister would remain a regular in horror indie fare until 2016, when ill health would force him to retire.
That year, the actor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, complicated by the effects of Lewy Body Dementia. Bannister’s condition significantly deteriorated in 2025, with his wife announcing he had entered hospice care. During this time, Bannister appealed for his fans to write to him, pledging to answer every correspondence personally.
Reggie Bannister died at his home in Crestline, California on August 9th 2026. He is survived by his third wife Gigi, and one child from his first marriage.
He was 80 years old.
