Just two weeks ago we reported that Scream series star Neve Campbell wasn’t just “in talks” to return for the seventh entry, rather that a source had told us she’d been signed to the project for some time.
Now, we have a similar update on another legacy character that sounds very promising. Our source tells us that Scream 3’s Patrick Dempsey has had discussions about returning to the role of Detective Mark Kincaid for Scream 7.
There is no word on if the actor has agreed to any terms, and there likely won’t be until the end of Hollywood’s strike action, but it sounds very encouraging. Furthermore, the odds of convincing Dempsey to return seem favourable as the actor is already working with Scream’s current production company on the upcoming slasher Thanksgiving. So, will we have Dempsey and Campbell return to fight Ghostface as a husband-and-wife team? Only time will tell.
An interesting further development is word of a “secret” fourth writer on the project, unannounced due to the Writers Guild of America strike. Currently we know the script will be penned by previous scribes Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt, with new director Christopher Landon also adding his flourishes.
So, who could this mysterious fourth scribe be? Rumours are wild alleging that it is franchise creator Kevin Williamson, but he is currently forced to keep silent due to the state of his union. This would certainly track with the idea that studio heads wish to keep his involvement quiet until the right time arrives for a “surprise” announcement, so we’ll just have to wait this one out!
Unfortunately, due to the current Hollywood strike action, the studio has been unable to make any solid announcements on Scream 7. However, we have been assured that once the all-clear is given, Paramount and Spyglass Media will roll full steam ahead with the seventh movie, and fans will be treated to announcements galore, so watch this space!
