As we reported back in February, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media were being sued.
According to a complaint filed by Alterian Ghost Factory, Paramount and Spyglass were infringing on their design.
According to Alterian, they created the iconic Ghostface design in the early nineties, and their design was consequently stolen by Fun World.
“Fun World had no right to license the mask, Alterian created the underlying design first, which was later copied by Fun World. Despite stringing along Alterian for more than a year with enticements of brokering a mutually acceptable resolution, Defendants — goliaths in the industry — shamelessly continue to rip off and profit from Alterian’s creative work with impunity.”
They filed legal action against Paramount, Spyglass, and Fun World, seeking compensation for years of image use. In response, the film companies counter filed on behalf of Ghostface copyright holder Fun World.
Now we can report that the legal action has been settled, with both parties dropping their suits.
It has been confirmed that merit has been found to Alterian’s claims as the originators of the Ghostface mask, despite Paramount’s claims that the suit was a “shake down.”
With the suits dropped, it’s highly likely that Alterian have received considerable compensation from both Paramount and Fun World.
However, as of this writing, Fun World retains the copyright over Alterian’s creation, suggesting that was part of the settlement.
With a potential court case settled, it looks like future Ghostface outings are secure, easing the worries of many fans.
