In an unexpected move, Blumhouse and Lionsgate announced a reboot of the Blair Witch property last week, as we reported.

Whilst this received widespread media attention, the response from genre fans hasn’t been stellar.

Now, we have a response from two people heavily involved in the classic original… And it’s telling, to say the least.

The first person to come forward was Ben Rock, production designer on 1999’s The Blair Witch Project. Rock spoke of his disappointment that the property was being revived for the third time, with no involvement from original creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez. According to Rock, neither have been contacted even once over the past 25 years, as others profit off their work.

“It’s bittersweet, honestly,” Rock began. “I do think that what has happened twice now was that the original creators were overlooked, and other people were brought in, all of whom were good. But neither one of the sequels connected with audiences the way they wanted it to connect. And so it might at least be worth talking to some of the original creators.”

Rock also noted that no one from Blumhouse or Lionsgate has reached out to Myrick or Sanchez as of this writing.

Mirroring Rock’s statements, Blair Witch Project cast member Joshua Leonard also spoke out on Instagram. Leonard expressed dismay that he learned of the project when a friend sent him a screenshot, featuring his image, before continuing:
“I’m so proud of our little punk-rock movie, and I LOVE the fans who keep the flames burning,” Leonard wrote. “But at this point, it’s 25 years of disrespect from the folks who’ve pocketed the lion’s share (pun intended) of the profits from OUR work, and that feels both icky and classless.”

So, it seems the announcement of a Blair Witch reboot has caused quite the stir, and has received significant media attention for doing so. Will this change the course of the project? We’ll be sure to let you know if that happens.
