It’s being hailed as a modern classic and a “masterpiece,” however, no one could’ve fathomed the fantastic box-office numbers Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has achieved.
Initially, the forecast was middling for the reboot of the 1922 silent classic, with many citing the statistically slim chance of box-office success over the Christmas holiday.
However, Nosferatu has defied all expectations, and shattered its initial $20 million debut estimate.
Between December 25th and January 1st, Eggers’ film achieved over double its forecasted debut, with an impressive $53.1 million domestically.
For a genre picture released during the holidays, such numbers are almost unheard of, as horror films released in December tend to fly under the radar.
Internationally, Nosferatu made an additional $3.1 million, bringing its first week total to an impressive $56.2 million.
This marks a significant shift in fortunes for the vampire sub-genre, which has struggled to connect with audiences over the past two years. Movies such as Renfield, Abigail, and The Last Voyage of Demeter all failed to turn a profit.
Perhaps it was the fantastic promotional campaign, or the universally positive critical reception, either way, Nosferatu has put vampires back at the top of the box-office.
