A wonderfully sinister clip has been released for Paul Verhoeven’s (RoboCop, Total Recall, Hollow Man) Elle; a thriller that follows a woman as she tries to track down the stranger that raped her. What ensues is an exciting, complex cat-and-mouse tale that suggests Elle would make a brilliant double bill with the Korean masterpiece I Saw The Devil. Perhaps not quite as brutal as the latter, but who knows?
In the clip we see Michele Leblanc (Isabelle Huppert) describe the should-be terrifying moment her father comes home covered in blood after killing 27 people. And some animals, don’t forget about them. A vivid picture is painted by Michele, who reminisces about the empty stare she embodied when she was a child. It’s gripping for such a simple scene and superbly hints at the quietly menacing thread that will be running through Elle’s seams.
Elle further stars Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny, Charles Berling and Virginie Efira. The story is based on the novel by Philippe Dijan. Elle will be play the London Film Festival on 8th October and will be released in the USA on 11th November 2016.
