It’s been four years since Blumhouse Productions last celebrated Purge Night, with 2021’s The Forever Purge. Although it was the lowest grossing of the series so far, the fifth entry took the franchise’s overall box-office total past a mind blowing $500 million.
Now, after a well-deserved rest, we’ve learned that The Purge creator James DeMonaco is eager to revitalise the series.
DeMonaco has had a hand in crafting all five Purge entries so far, directing the first three, and co-writing 2018’s The First Purge and The Forever Purge.
And, according to DeMonaco, a sixth Purge film is in the very near future. Speaking recently, the filmmaker stated:
“I just finished a script. My producer, Sébastien Lemercier, has read multiple drafts, given me notes. We just handed it to Jason [Blum], I’m really happy with it. I hope they like it. I think it’s cool and fun.”
So, when can we expect to see this sixth Purge entry? Well, according to DeMonaco… very soon!
“We’re hoping next year would be great to shoot, maybe the end of this year if timing works out. But now it’s with the powers that be, so we’ll see what happens.”
And what will the sixth Purge movie entail? Well, DeMonaco kept his cards close to the vest, but did tease the return of a fan favourite character:
“People’s favourite character might be coming back, I can say without naming who that is; a couple of people who could be. But someone’s coming back who I love and I think the audience loves.”
Although DeMonaco never names this “fan favourite” character, fans have speculated that it’s Sgt. Leo Barnes, portrayed by actor Frank Grillo. Barnes has been one of the few recurring characters in The Purge franchise, appearing in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year.
Also teased is the introduction of a new female hero in the new script:
“Then we create some real great female heroes in this one. There are some really amazing women. We’ve had some great women in the past, but real warrior women come forth here in a way that we haven’t really explored on Purge night.”
So, exciting times ahead for The Purge fans! Will we be seeing the franchise roar back into theatres next year? We’ll let you know as soon as we have confirmation.
