It was a daunting time for movies post-covid, with the horror genre seemingly suffering the most. Movies like Freaky, Spiral, and even The Conjuring 3 all took significantly less than expected at the box-office, due to the public’s hesitance to return to theatres.
However, Nia DaCosta’s Candyman became an unexpected hit for Universal, topping the box-office for two weeks in a row in September 2021.
A legacy sequel to 1992’s Candyman, DaCosta’s film saw the filmmaker reinvent the Candyman mythos to great success. Grossing $80 million on a $25 million budget, the film reintroduced horror as a formidable force at the box-office post Covid.
It’s been over three years since DaCosta’s Candyman, and despite brief rumblings of a sequel, nothing has materialised.
However, that all may be about to change…
A trusted source tells us that a new Candyman instalment is in the works at Universal, with the studio eager to turn Candyman into their next big horror franchise, following the conclusion of the latest Halloween trilogy.
Development is said to be in the early stages, meaning no solid plot details have emerged, but we’re told its “Unlikely” writer-director Nia DaCosta will be returning. Of course, DaCosta is currently busy working on 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the sequel to Danny Boyle’s upcoming zombie reboot 28 Years Later.
Sadly, original Candyman star Tony Todd passed away just a few months ago, meaning his cameo at the end of the 2021 sequel cannot be elaborated upon.
So, what’s next for Candyman and how much longer will we have to wait for this sequel? We’ll keep our ear to the ground and report any further developments.
