“Welcome home, Sidney…”

Finally, after weeks of speculation and following the tiniest breadcrumbs of information, we have a solid update for Scream 7. It also just happens to be the one thing everyone wanted to know.

Neve Campbell has officially signed to reprise her role as series lead Sidney Prescott.

Announcing the news via Instagram on Tuesday March 12, Campbell shared a photo of her personal copy of the script by Guy Busick. Alongside the picture, Campbell confirmed her involvement with the following statement:
“Hi All. I’m so excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!! It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!!”

Campbell’s announcement immediately broke the horror sphere, however, reactions to the news have been somewhat mixed. Of course, there is a sizeable camp that’s excited to see Sidney Prescott return, but some have made it very clear how unhappy they are.

Campbell’s social media was soon flooded with comments criticising the actress’ choice to reprise the role without new series lead Melissa Barrera.

As we’ve covered extensively, Barrera was fired from the project in November, due to social media comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Despite several meetings and much uproar, Barrera ultimately didn’t rejoin the project.

Hopefully the positive outweighs the negative for Campbell and series fans alike, as having her back for another movie has been uncertain for so many months. The actress teased her involvement multiple times over the past several months, igniting a firestorm of speculation. Her announcement is doubly welcome given that Campbell was absent for 2023’s Scream VI, due to salary negotiations breaking down.

Hopefully, Campbell is getting her worth this time around, and can look past the fan clamouring.

Welcome back, Neve, we’re very happy to have you!
