NEON MOUNTING A “FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION” OSCAR CAMPAIGN FOR “LONGLEGS”

Posted on: November 12th, 2024

After grossing $108 million worldwide, officially becoming the highest grossing independent horror film in history, NEON have decided to go for gold with Longlegs.

NEON have officially launched a “for your consideration campaign” for their highest grossing feature of all time, appealing for the Academy to recognise the film’s Oscar potential.

In their official announcement of the Oscar campaign, the studio outlined that they are campaigning for a nomination in every available category. However, the ones of highest note are:
* Best Director – Osgood Perkins
* Best Original Screenplay – Osgood Perkins
*Best Actress – Maika Monroe
* Best Supporting Actor – Nicolas Cage
* Best Supporting Actor – Blair Underwood
* Best Supporting Actress – Alicia Witt

If the feature were to receive nominations in any of these categories, that would only add to an already record-breaking reputation for Longlegs. However, if Longlegs were to snag a prestigious Academy Award, we can only imagine the doors it could open for NEON and independent horror.

Of course, horror has been nominated, and indeed won, at the Academy Awards before. Most recently Jordan Peele has received several nominations for Get Out, Us, and Nope. In terms of wins, genre pictures tend to bag lesser categories, such as make-up or sound editing. However, there are some instances when a horror movie sweeps the board, with 1991’s Silence of the Lambs being the best example.

So, can Longlegs take that extra step and woo the Academy? We sure hope so, and wish the cast and crew all the best with the Oscar campaign.
