A mind-boggling and chilling first trailer has been released for A24’s anticipated horror film Hereditary. The film is already being praised as the scariest of the year and with A24’s track record of releasing films like Green Room and The Witch, we won’t be surprised if this ends up as the most terrifying, effective and impressive horror film of 2018.
We’re determined to keep our expectations low, regardless. There is nothing worse than setting yourself up for disappointment with too high expectations.
Synopsis:
When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.
We think the trailer looks wickedly impressive; boasting a sinister score and a series of events that look absolutely twisted. It’s difficult to gauge what exactly is going on, but we love the film’s idea of a mother leaving behind her literal demons. The sharp editing, the intense use of close-ups and the subtle eeriness that is conjured around the doll house all culminate together to craft something that looks effortlessly frightening.
Make sure you catch the film when it is released on 8th June 2018. The film stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, and Milly Shapiro.
