It’s a great time to be a Mike Flanagan fan.
Not only is Flanagan putting the finishing touches to the next instalment of The Exorcist franchise, but soon his series adaption of Stephen King’s Carrie will debut.
To that end, Flanagan has already lined up his next King adaption, and intends to dive straight in once The Exorcist hits screens.
As we reported some time ago, Flanagan is set to direct a new feature adaption of King’s famous novella The Mist.
Now, as he gears up to promote Carrie for Amazon MGM, Flanagan is inevitably being asked about future work. Excitingly, Flanagan has given an update on his version of The Mist, saying:
“I’m writing it right now. I was working on it on the airplane here. I’ll be turning in my first draft around Halloween.”
Exciting news indeed. Given Flanagan’s reputation for producing high-quality, relatively faithful King adaptions, he’s certainly the filmmaker for the job.
Of course, King’s 1980 novella has twice been adapted before. The first was the 2007 film by Frank Darabont, which remains highly regarded among King devotees and general audiences. A decade later, the material was adapted for the small-screen in a short-lived television series airing on Spike.
Regarding previous adaptions, Flanagan has adamantly stated that his vision is not a remake, saying:
“I love Darabont’s film, and there’s zero point in remaking it. Which is why I’m going in a different direction. This isn’t a retread. The differences start page 1.”
So, exciting times ahead for Flanagan and King fans alike. We’ll let you know when we have any further details on Flanagan’s The Mist, including when we can expect it to hit screens. Stay tuned!
