She’s a fuckin’ movie star…
Ti West’s MaXXXine was easily one of the most anticipated horror movies of the year, so it’s little surprise that fans turned out to support it.
Following the events of 2022’s X, MaXXXine picks up in 1985, following Mia Goth’s titular character as she navigates the path to movie stardom. Of course, along the way, a series of murders complicate her quest.
West’s series has become a favourite among fans, chiefly due to the captivating lead performances from Mia Goth, so box-office hopes were high.
Opening to a three-day total of $6.7 million, MaXXXine achieved the highest opening numbers of the X franchise. A further $1.1 million was made from additional territories, totalling a worldwide opening gross of $7.8 million.
By comparison, X debuted to $4.3 million, whilst prequel Pearl reaped $3.1 million. So, MaXXXine is a significant leap forward in terms of profit, undoubtedly due to the growing reputation the series has, thanks to its continuing popularity on home media.
Whilst MaXXXine is intended to be the final chapter in the Maxine Minx story, West has stated that due to the unexpected popularity of the films, he may craft a fourth entry. With praise from Stephen King and Martin Scorsese, MaXXXine has definitely left viewers wanting more of this enigmatic character.
Will it come to pass? According to West, it all depends on the final box-office tally.
