Back in March, we discussed the news from Maniac Cop creator William Lustig that a reboot would shoot this fall.
However, it appears that window has been delayed slightly, but there is some good news!
We can confirm that Nicolas Winding Refn’s Maniac Cop reboot has been acquired by Mubi and Goodfellas for worldwide distribution.
According to an official source, Refn’s film is set to begin production in January of 2027.
Regarding their new acquisition, Mubi CEO Efe Cakarel said:
“Maniac Cop’ in Nicolas’s hands is not a remake. It is a resurrection. Nicolas has one of the most dangerous imaginations in modern cinema, and he is exactly the filmmaker to reawaken something this iconic. We’re proud to be partnering with him on a film that feels bold, singular and impossible to ignore.”
On why he chose to reboot Maniac Cop, Refn revealed:
“The concept has always appealed to me. In today’s political and social climate, the iconography of ‘Maniac Cop’ alone provokes an immediate, uneasy reaction. I’ve been watching it all unfold while constructing this project in the shadows… waiting. Now, that moment has finally arrived. The time has come to unveil a radical new vision where there is no protection, no safety net, only mayhem…”
1988’s Maniac Cop may not have set the box-office on fire, but it was popular enough to spawn two sequels. All have gained cult classic status, and writer-director William Lustig has been trying to launch a reboot for over a decade now.
Initially it seemed as though the project was dead in the water, with a television adaption at HBO even being scrapped mid-production.
However, now it seems things are finally moving in the right direction after a series of stops and starts.
