“M3GAN 2.0” AND “THE BLACK PHONE 2” MOVE INTO NEW RELEASE DATES

Posted on: June 2nd, 2024

In that further Blumhouse calendar update we promised you; we have two highly-anticipated projects moving into new release dates.

M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to 2022’s killer robot flick, moves into its third date in the last six months. Initially expected January 17th 2025, the film was delayed to May 16. Now, just a few weeks later, M3GAN 2.0 is set to debut on June 27th.

No reason was given for the new date, but it’s suspected that getting production together in New Zealand is taking longer than expected. Director Gerard Johnstone has yet to sign on to the project, despite a script being complete, and stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw set to return.

Next, we have a new date for Scott Derrickson’s sequel to 2022’s The Black Phone.

Initially expected on June 27th 2025, The Black Phone 2 will now premiere 4 months later, on October 17th 2025.

Again, no reason was given for the shuffle, but it doesn’t sound as though production is in trouble. Original stars Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, and Madeleine McGraw are all locked into return. Scott Derrickson and creative partner C. Robert Cargill have penned the script, with Derrickson intending to take up directing duties once more.

The likely cause of The Black Phone suddenly shifting is competition from neighbouring studios or a release in the same genre. And whilst we want as much horror as possible to fill the release slate, studios know it’s vitally important to avoid too much head-to-head competition.

So, we’ll keep on the lookout for any further changes to these projects and let you know.
