Preliminary reports suggest actress Linda Blair will be reprising her iconic role as Regan MacNeil in David Gordon Green’s legacy sequel.
If true, this will mark Blair’s first involvement with the franchise since 1977s controversial sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic. However, it’s important to note that the extent of Blair’s involvement in the project is unclear.
Initially the actress took to social media and made clear she had not been approached about the film, but wished those involved “all the best.” This came following the announcement that Ellen Burstyn would return as matriarch Chris MacNeil and fans thought it only natural that her on-screen daughter would also be included.
Whilst this new announcement makes clear Blair is involved in the project, we still don’t know to what degree. Reports suggest the actress was on set for “just a few days” and a spokesperson for Blumhouse claims the Blair “served as an advisor.”
From this it’s difficult to discern if Blair will appear on-screen, but fans are hopeful that this does indeed spell the return of Regan MacNeil.
Green’s sequel comes on the heels of his success rejuvenating the Halloween series and has attracted the talents of Leslie Odom Jr, Ann Dowd, and Rapheal Sbarge. Following Odom as he seeks help from Ellen Burstyn’s Chris MacNeil, The Exorcist will detail a father’s fight to save his possessed daughter. Pitched as the first film in a new trilogy, The Exorcist is set for release October 23rd 2023.
We will keep our eye on this one and report any further clarification on Blair’s involvement.
