“What happened to Katie…?”
Recently, we brought you the news that the re-envisioning of 1932’s The Mummy was in trouble.
A co-production between Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, and Blumhouse Productions, the film was set to be titled simply The Mummy.
Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin served as writer and director, having kept the project secret for months.
However, following test screenings, the film was thrown into turmoil. It was reported that the reception was so negative that Universal Studios had revoked the right for the film to use the title The Mummy. Consequently, Universal opted to resurrect the property themselves, and a fourth instalment of their 2000’s Mummy incarnation was announced.
It was quickly assumed that Cronin’s film was being retooled, and would likely not make its April 2026 release date.
However, it looks as if all parties are pressing ahead with the film, now titled Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.
Warner Bros. debuted a new teaser this past week, giving us our first look at the film. Giving very little away, the brief clip only shows us the smallest snatches from the film.
An official synopsis reads:
“The young daughter of a journalist disappears without a trace in the desert. The shattered family is stunned when the girl suddenly reappears eight years later. But what should have been a joyful family reunion quickly turns into a true and horrifying nightmare.”
Sounding like an unconventional take on the Mummy mythos, the teaser has garnered a mixed response online.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy stars Jack Raynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Verónica Falcón.
The movie is still slated to hit screens on April 17th 2026. So, it won’t be long until we find out if standing by this movie was the right move.
