KEVIN WILLIAMSON STRIKES DEAL WITH UNIVERSAL TO BRING “REAR WINDOW” TO TELEVISION

Posted on: February 26th, 2024

It’s a good time to be Kevin Williamson.

Not only has the Scream scribe been attached as a producer to the last two massively successful entries in the series, but his slasher flick Sick received rave reviews last year.

Now, Williamson is looking to head back to the world of episodic television.

Recently, the screenwriter and filmmaker struck a sizeable overall deal with Universal Television that will allow Williamson to develop four projects simultaneously.

Whilst none of the projects fall specifically within the “horror” bracket, one has gotten genre fans talking.

Slated for development is an episodic “reimagining” of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 classic Rear Window, a taut suspense thriller with many horror leanings.

In the film, James Stewart plays a housebound photographer amusing himself by peering into his neighbours’ lives. Things take a sinister turn when he believes a salesman in the apartment across the way has murdered his wife and is trying to cover it up.

The tense classic was given the remake treatment twice before, once as a television movie with Christopher Reeve in 1998, and most recently as Disturbia in 2007.

Given Williamson’s love for all things Hitchcockian, this project could be in no safer hands. Given that the deal has just been struck, no further details are available. However, if the project goes ahead, the series is expected to stream on Peacock.

Will Hitchcock’s classic translate well to television? We’ll keep an eye on this one and report any further movement.
