KARL HOLT TALKS ‘BENNY LOVES YOU’

Posted on: May 10th, 2021

Back in 2006, Karl Holt decided to try his hand at directing horror with the short film ‘Eddie Loves You’. Making deft use of a shoestring budget and a tattered “Tickle-Me-Elmo” toy, the end product went on to take home a handful of awards on the international horror festival circuit. Bitten by the filmmaking bug, Holt followed this success up with a series of shorts but, on turning 40, he felt the need to film a feature-length movie if he wanted to turn directing into his day job.

Armed with his newly adopted now-or-never mentality, in 2013 he knuckled down to rework his first short into ‘Benny Loves You’, a feature-length adaptation which he shot in the summer of 2014 and 2015 with a skeleton crew of mostly 2-3 people (one of those being his Mum). It then took several more years of post production before he was able to get the feature out and into festivals. And now, following successful screenings on the international circuit, the film is all set to release On Demand this May 11 before hitting Blu-ray on June 8.

Written by, directed by and starring Holt, Benny Loves You introduces audiences to Jack whose comfortable lifestyle comes to an end when he has no option but to sell his family home following the accidental death of his parents. Desperate to improve his life, Jack throws out his childhood belongings including his beloved plush, Benny. It’s a move that has disastrous consequences when Benny suddenly springs to life with deadly intentions…

To celebrate the impending release, SCREAM caught up with Holt who revealed how the film was semi-autobiographical in a number of ways and just how painstaking a process it was to bring Benny to life and take him to places where no other formerly-inanimate plaything has been before…
