Prolific actor Sam Neill, beloved for his role in 1993’s Jurassic Park, has passed away.
Born Nigel Neill on September 14th 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, Sam would soon move to New Zealand.
Privately educated, Neill struggled with a stammer during his formative years. Still unsure about his career path by 1965, he chose to pursue law.
However, Neill was much more taken by the theatre scene at The University of Canterbury, taking on several roles in student productions. After failing his law course, Neill decided performance was his best fit.
After obtaining a degree from the Victoria University of Wellington, Neill began work as a jobbing actor.
He soon found local success in New Zealand-based films like City of No and Landfall. However, his breakthrough role came in 1977’s thriller Sleeping Dogs. This led to roles in several Australian productions, including The Journalist and My Brilliant Career.
1981 would see Neill break Hollywood when he was selected from hundreds of auditionees to play an adult Damien Thorn in The Final Conflict. The movie acted as a conclusion to the hugely successful Omen franchise, winning Neill rave reviews.
That same year, Neill stuck with the horror genre, taking the lead in Andrzej Żuławski’s controversial domestic horror Possession.
The rest of the decade would see Neill’s career go from strength-to-strength, starring in the likes of Enigma, Plenty, and Dead Calm. Neill would also garner awards recognition for 1989’s Evil Angels, opposite Meryl Streep.
1993 would see Neill take on his most iconic role, playing Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster Jurassic Park. A worldwide phenomenon, Neill would later return to the franchise in 2001’s Jurassic Park III and 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion.
That same year, Neill garnered strong notices for his turn in the Oscar winning feature The Piano. 1994 would mark Neill’s second collaboration with filmmaker John Carpenter, resulting in the cult classic horror film In the Mouth of Madness.
Neill was also equally as prolific in television, starring in the likes of Merlin, Peaky Blinders, The Tudors, Reilly, Ace of Spice, and The Twelve.
The actor had several projects in post-production upon his death, including Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
Sam Neill died on July 13th 2026 in Sydney, Australia. Despite a recent battle with Leukaemia, Neill was cancer free upon his passing. His death has been described as “sudden and unexpected.” The actor is survived by his four children. Sam Neill was 78 years old.
