It’s not looking good for a couple of sequels at the moment. Pacific Rim 2’s future is hanging in the balance despite Guillermo del Toro promising it’s not dead…yet, and now World War Z 2 has lost its director. Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) has decided to leave the project to give himself more time to finish A Monster Calls, which stars Felicity Jones and Liam Neeson and is currently in post-production. The director had been attached to World War Z 2 for a year and agreed to take the post only if he could wrap A Monster Calls, which has now not been the case.
This is a definite shame for the film and the director; World War Z grossed a phenomenal $540 at the box office, so it’s no wonder that Paramount is keen to get a sequel going. Nonetheless, Bayona was recently sought after by Universal who was keen to have him direct a Jurassic World sequel, so as one door closes perhaps another one is waiting to open…
World War Z 2 has a script written by Steven Knight and Dennis Kelly, with Brad Pitt returning to star and produce. The film has a release date slated for 9th June 2017, so it needs to hit its production stage soon. So, who do you think will land the directing job?
