Big news today; it is currently being reported that Get Out’s Jordan Peele is to remake Bernard Rose’s classic slasher-romance Candyman. It hasn’t been confirmed if he will direct the film himself, but Peele will produce the remake through his Monkeypaw Productions.
Interesting, huh?
I don’t want to preach that all remakes are bad or to argue that Candyman is a sacred product that shouldn’t be touched. Bernard Rose’s adaptation of Clive Barker’s short story is a brilliant tale of twisted love and horror, but remakes, re-imaginings and re-tellings are here to stay. I do wonder who can fill the shoes left by Tony Todd, who masterfully portrayed a complex, deadly killer intent on avenging the wrongs he was victim to in life.
If anything, it would be a timely and fitting remake that would fit nicely (or horribly) in the current social climate. Who better than to breath fresh life into this socially-driven tale than the director of the Oscar-winning Get Out?
