Although he hasn’t directed a motion picture for almost 15 years, John Carpenter continues to flourish as a composer. Beginning with Lost Themes in 2015, Carpenter has steadily been releasing new music in the subsequent album series, as well as composing for Blumhouse Productions.

After teasing “big things” for a week or two now, Carpenter has announced a brand-new album; Lost Themes IV: Noir!

Once again working with his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies, Carpenter and Sacred Bone Records announced the album with a new single entitled My Name is Death. The synth-heavy track is accompanied by a suitably moody music video that you can watch below.

Speaking on the process of crafting the album, Daniel Davies had the following to say:
“Sandy [King, John’s wife and producer] had given John a book for Christmas, of pictures from noir films, all stills from that era. I was looking through it, and I thought, ‘I like that imagery, and what those titles make me think of. What if we loosely based it around that? What if the titles were of some of John’s favourite noir films?’ Some of the music is heavy guitar riffs, which is not in old noir films. But somehow, it’s connected in an emotional way.”

Continuing the trend of scoring films that never existed, Carpenter lovingly describes his Lost Themes collections as “music for the movies in your mind.”

Lost Themes IV: Noir will release on May 3rd 2024, in a variety of formats. These include multiple vinyl records, a CD edition, a cassette tape, and of course, digital. You can check out the track listing and the music video for My Name is Death below:
