We’ve been talking a lot about the upcoming Overlord film since it was announced last year and we’ve all assumed it’s been another sequel-spin-off from the Cloverfield universe. However, at CinemaCon, JJ Abrams confirmed that Overlord is not the “secret” Cloverfield sequel we were expecting from Bad Robot.
On Twitter, critic Eric Vespe said:
“JJ Abrams said Overlord is Bad Robot’s first R-Rated movie and swears it’s not a secret Cloverfield movie. In fact they are working a dedicated Cloverfield sequel right now.”
It’s rare to be surprised that a film is not a secret sequel to an established franchise, but here we are!
It’s good to know that there is a direct sequel in the works and we’d really like some more information on that one, please. The franchise’s last addition The Cloverfield Paradox was dire, so we’re really hoping that this new sequel is an improvement and doesn’t feel like an already average sci-fi shoe-horned into the Clover-verse.
Overlord is set on the eve of D-Day and will follow a group of American paratroppers as they realise a Nazi-occupied village may have more going on than meets the eye. JJ Abrams previously called the film “crazy”, so we’re very much looking forward to it.
Overlord will be released by Paramount on 26th October 2018.
