Just over two months ago, we reported that Warner Bros were keen to move forward with a third feature entry in the Gremlins franchise.
Absent from the big screen for 35 years, a quote from screenwriter Chris Columbus suggested that a new chapter he had penned was in development.
Apparently eager to capitalize on the success of legacy sequels, Warner Bros have allegedly agreed to produce Gremlins on the condition Columbus pen a sequel to 1985’s The Goonies.
Understandably, this news generated industry hype, and one high-profile star is keen to hop aboard the project.
Speaking at the premiere of her latest film Death of a Unicorn, actress Jenna Ortega was asked which other mythical creatures she’d like to see on the big screen.
Ortega stated with a smile:
“You know what I used to love as a kid? Gremlins, I would love… Gremlins 3? 4? Call me.”
Although only a throwaway comment, the fact a Gremlins reboot is in active development gives Ortega’s words significantly more weight.
Given Ortega’s profile and popularity, her statement may just be what gets a new Gremlins project on the fast track. With her expanding Scream Queen repertoire, we’re sure many out there would champion the Scream star battling mogwai.
Undoubtedly, we’ll know soon if the powers that be have heard Ortega’s words, so watch this space!
