Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has dropped out of the upcoming slasher sequel Scream 7, it was confirmed November 22nd.
Ortega, known for the role of Tara Carpenter in the rebooted series, has blamed scheduling conflicts for her departure. As we reported last week, the actress is due in Ireland this coming April to begin shooting season two of Netflix’s Wednesday.
As we speculated at the time, the season’s April start date may make it difficult for Ortega to reprise her role in Scream 7. The project is said to be looking toward a March 2024 shoot, meaning Ortega would be otherwise engaged or juggling a very hectic schedule.
However, speculation is rampant that Jenna Ortega has exited the film in solidarity with co-star and friend Melissa Barrera. Barrera was recently fired from the starring role in Scream 7 due to controversial social media posts on the Israel-Palestine conflict, causing quite the uproar among fans. Given the two actors close bond, it’s certainly feasible that Ortega would refuse to do the film without her co-star. However, this is just speculation, and so far, the official reason given for Ortega’s exit is scheduling conflicts.
A source tells us that the producers had already made changes to accommodate Ortega’s prior engagements. It is alleged that the character of Tara Carpenter would appear in a limited capacity, and primarily alone, in the current version of Scream 7. So, perhaps Ortega was displeased with her reduced role of little more than a cameo.
Whatever the true reason behind Jenna Ortega’s exit, the fact is that Scream 7 is now in serious disarray with the loss of both leads. Things looked promising with word that several legacy characters were poised to return, but now the project teeters on the brink of disaster.
Will this sequel be scrapped altogether? Or will the project proceed with some significant rewriting?
Only time will tell, and we’ll report any further updates as they come in.
