Rumours have been flying lately about director James Wan finally returning to the horror genre. It was initially reported that he’d be directing the pilot episode of a new Amazon series based on I Know What You Did Last Summer, but this turned out to be false. What he is directing is a new horror film for New Line, and while details are scarce, what he has shared is exciting.
“There’s been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is… all I’ll say is, I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller,” Wan wrote on his official Facebook page. “An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets.”
Here’s what else we know so far: Wan is co-writing the script with Ingrid Bisu, and the film will likely shoot in LA this autumn. Wan will also produce the film along with Michael Clear for Atomic Monster.
Wan last directed a horror film in 2016 with The Conjuring 2. His most recent movie, DC’s Aquaman, grossed over $1 billion at the box office worldwide.
