Quite unbelievably, it has been 8 years since It Follows defied all expectations and became what many call a modern horror classic.
The slow-burn psychologically-driven tale details a supernatural force, born of a sexual encounter, that harasses its target until death, unless they pass it on.
The tale was likened to the work of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter, and applauded for its focus on suspense and a message on sexual promiscuity that remained subtle.
Talk of a sequel began almost immediately following the unexpected success of It Follows, with a prequel idea being floated. However, almost a decade would pass and nothing ever came to fruition… Until now.
Although we don’t know much, an official announcement was made on October 30th 2023, announcing a sequel entitled They Follow. The project is currently in pre-production with very little confirmed.
What we do know is that writer-director David Robert Mitchell will be returning alongside star Maika Monroe. Tom Quinn, vice president of Radius-TWC, distributor of the original, will also return to distribute They Follow via his company Neon.
Filming is expected to begin some time in the first quarter of 2024, meaning the sequel may release just in time for the 10th anniversary of It Follows.
We’ll keep an eye on this project and report any further development, however, it looks likely we’ll all be looking over our shoulder once more very soon.
