We do enjoy reporting on the streaming debut of movies we’ve covered over the year, it feels rather satisfying. Also, not everyone is able to attend the theatre, and we’re happy to play a small part in brightening up their week.
To that end we’re happy to announce that two movies we’ve reported on extensively have arrived at home.
First up, we have the unique slasher In a Violent Nature from IFC and Shudder. After reaping over $5 million with it’s limited theatrical release, the experimental film has now debuted on-demand.
The tale follows a killer as he stalks a group of friends that have unintentionally resurrected him. In a Violent Nature has received much notice for its unconventional filmmaking and narrative choices, some calling it a breath of fresh air for the slasher sub-genre.
Shot almost entirely from the killer’s perspective, the movie employs ambient sound, lacks a musical score, and takes place primarily during daylight. Receiving high praise from the likes of Stephen King, why not rent this one and see what all the fuss is about?
Next, we have Russell Crowe’s second supernatural thriller inside a year, as Joshua John Miller’s The Exorcism has come home to make some heads spin.
Described as a “meta commentary on,” and a “loving tribute to” 1973’s The Exorcist, the film sees Crowe take on the lead in an exorcism-based production that seems to be cursed.
Receiving praise for its incorporation of The Exorcist’s cultural impact, as well as being a study on just how dangerous immersive acting can be, The Exorcism has flown somewhat under the radar.
After a scant theatrical release, the movie is now available on-demand, so why not give it a try? You may have stumbled upon one of the most underrated genre films of the year.
Happy viewing, folks!
