Despite a huge promotional push from Sony, things looked rather dire for their I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel.
Despite initial estimates stating the film could debut to as much as $20 million domestically, the final tally was just $12.5 million.
Despite a respectable $25 million worldwide debut, the poor domestic showing had many writing the film off as a failure.
However, as we speculated it might during our initial reporting, Last Summer has appeared to grow some much-needed legs.
Whilst the domestic numbers are still below what Sony would’ve liked; the international gross has held strong.
Now, I Know What You Did Last Summer has grossed an impressive $60 million worldwide, defying the odds and remaining in the box-office top ten for a month.
Whilst this gross may seem small in comparison to heavy hitters like Final Destination or Sinners, $60 million is easily enough to land Last Summer in the black. With a production budget of $18 million, and a reported $20 million spent on promotion, the sequel broke even at $38 million. So, although not as lucrative as Sony had initially hoped, the film has landed a tidy profit for the studio.
However, given lukewarm critical reception, it seems unlikely that we’ll get a sequel, despite the film’s divisive ending. Although director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has been open about her hopes for more, the box-office struggle may put Last Summer to bed, despite it being the little movie that could.
