We’re only a few episodes into HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, but it comes as no surprise that a second season has already been ordered. With the premiere raking in 4.7 million viewers on the first day and the second episode surpassing that by a million, the series is a certified hit.
“I’m humbled, honoured, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey,” Neil Druckmann, creator of The Last of Us, said in a statement. “The collaboration with [showrunner] Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog and PlayStation, thank you!”
“I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey,” Mazin added. “The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”
Taking place 20 years after modern civilisation has been destroyed, The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, a hardened survivor who is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. But what starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartrending journey as the pair are forced to traverse across the U.S., depending on one another for survival.
Season 2 of The Last of Us is set to adapt the game’s sequel. We’ll bring you more news about development as we hear it.
