Scream fans thought Christmas had come early on September 22nd, when news was seemingly broken that actress Hayden Panettiere would return for the seventh instalment.
In an editorial piece on the actress, Entertainment Weekly closed with the claim that Panettiere would “next be seen opposite Neve Campbell in Scream 7.”
Panettiere’s character of Kirby Reed is a firm favourite with series fans, appearing in 2011’s Scream 4 and 2023’s Scream VI. So, the news that she was returning once again made quite the splash among the fandom.
However, we can confirm that the report seemingly confirming Panettiere’s involvement in the seventh instalment has since been retracted.
The media outlet has since modified their article, now stating that Hayden Panettiere’s involvement in Scream 7 “has not yet been confirmed.”
So, it seems the hopes of countless fans have soared and then been shattered in record time.
However, the publication of such a statement, plus its quick retraction, has made many fans suspicious.
A theory has now taken root among the Scream fandom that Entertainment Weekly may have divulged a piece of information that they weren’t supposed to. Rumours of numerous “secret” cameos in Scream 7 have been rife ever since several legacy characters were confirmed to return. On the heels of this, reliable sources began circulating word that even more beloved faces would appear in the film, but would not be publicly announced.
Could it be that Entertainment Weekly has blown the ultimate surprise for Scream fans? Or, was the tabloid simply misinformed, leading to a genuine mistake?
We likely won’t know the full truth of Hayden Panettiere’s involvement in Scream 7 until the film hits screens on February 27th 2026.
Until then, we’ll be on the hunt for any other Scream related news.
