Recently, we brought you the unfortunate news that Halloween: The Game had been denied a rating in Australia and New Zealand.
This meant that the survival horror game would be unavailable to purchase and play in both regions.
Contrary to reports at the time, the game was not denied a rating certificate due to violent content. No, in fact, the Australian Classifications Board objected to the “use of a controlled substance” within the game.
Whilst the ban remains in place throughout Australia, we can now bring you the pleasing news that upon appeal, New Zealand has agreed to release Halloween: The Game digitally.
Overriding the digital ban by the Australian Classifications Board, New Zealand will stock the game on all digital outlets with an 18+ certificate.
However, physical copies will remain unavailable, as the New Zealand Office of Film and Literature Classification can’t override the Australian boards initial refusal on physical media.
So, whilst not a complete victory, a small win nonetheless for Halloween: The Game.
Those behind the Halloween franchise have issued a statement saying they remain committed to obtaining a full release in Australia and New Zealand.
Halloween: The Game will release on September 8th 2026, and will be available both physically and digitally for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. Standard and deluxe editions of the game are available to pre-order now.
