It was huge news in the horror community recently when Halloween sparked a fierce bidding war in Hollywood. Blumhouse Productions had surrendered their portion of the rights, and the war ultimately came down to bids from A24 and Miramax. Miramax won the bid, making them a greater partner in the series, alongside Trancas International Films. Almost immediately after securing the television rights, it was announced Halloween would be heading to the small screen.

Given that the thirteenth movie, Halloween Ends, “concluded” the franchise less than 18 months ago, we didn’t bargain on hearing anything about this supposed television venture for quite some time… However, it turns out we were wrong.

Miramax CEO, Marc Helwig has offered an unexpected update on the status of the series, as well as providing some fresh details:
“The foundation of it is the original film, the John Carpenter movie, the characters of that film, and perhaps a group of characters that we haven’t really focused on that much in recent film versions or even in a number of them. It’s a creative reset completely and going back to the original film, as opposed to spinning out of any of the more recent film adaptations.”

So, we will once again have a Halloween timeline reset, jumping off from the 1978 original. This decision was greeted with a mixed reaction when announced as David Gordon Green’s approach in 2018. However, given the glut of legacy sequels that film inspired, tying a movie directly to its original is much more common place now.

When can we expect this television outing? Soon, if Helwig has his way. The CEO continued:
“We’re on a fast track, it’s a big priority for us. We’ve had lots of exciting conversations in recent months with a number of really talented people, and I think we’ll have a pretty good idea of what we’re going to be doing very soon. We’re hoping to lock down the creative team very soon.”

So, less than 2 years after he made his grand exit on the big-screen, Michael Myers is set to terrorise television for the very first time. It is also hoped this new venture will spin-off into features, meaning the series will likely be active for many years to come.

We’ll be watching this story closely for any further updates.
