A gritty first teaser has arrived for Lynne Ramsay’s (We Need to Talk About Kevin) latest mystery-thriller You Were Never Really Here. The film recently closed the Cannes Film Festival as the last competition film to be screened, with many critics describing the festival as leaving the best for last.
The film, which many are comparing to Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and its infamous antihero Travis Bickle, follows an ex-veteran with PTSD who now works as a protector while living with his mother. When he is tasked with saving a young woman from a sex trafficking ring, things go from bad to worse, making the job far more difficult than he could have imagined.
The trailer is a short and sweet tease, showcasing the film’s inner and outer darkness in a mere few seconds. This looks like it could be Ramsay’s most sinister effort yet, promising a high body count and plenty of psychological upset.
You Were Never Really Here stars Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov and Alessandro Nivola. The film is based on the novella of the same name written by Jonathan Ames.
