Not so long ago, we reported the confirmation of two Chris Columbus legacy projects at Warner Bros.
A sequel to 1985’s The Goonies was the one that had most movie fans excited. However, Columbus only agreed to pen a Goonies sequel if a longtime passion project was greenlit alongside it.
For years now, Columbus has been championing a script for a third Gremlins instalment, and as we learned earlier this year, it was finally being made.
Since then, things have been quiet on the status of the project. However, now we finally have an update on Gremlins 3, and it looks like things are further along than we anticipated.
According to a recent interview with Gremlins star Zach Galligan, the script is complete, has been approved by Warner Bros. and is now in the hands of Steven Spielberg:
“After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script. Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it, apparently, it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it.”
Undoubtedly, Spielberg’s feedback will be vital to if Gremlins 3 goes before cameras or not. However, Galligan’s words sound promising, as the star later elaborated that the studio was moved to revisit the Gremlins brand after the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Is it possible that the mischievous Mogwai could see similar success upon a return to the big screen? We certainly hope so!
We’ll keep our ear to the ground for any further Gremlins updates, and bring them to you as soon as we can.
