Monster-verse fans have been impatiently waiting for any news on the next instalment of the Godzilla and Kong cross-over franchise since it was announced last year that principal photography had been completed. Now fans’ wishes have come true, as Legendary and Warner Bros. have announced the title of the series’ fifth film, as well as a release date and news on casting.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was announced as the movie’s official title on April 19th, with Legendary releasing a short teaser to their YouTube channel. In the clip, a forlorn Kong sits atop a toppled throne as the camera zooms out to reveal destruction all around him, before eventually revealing Godzilla in its final shot.
Legendary describes Godzilla x Kong as follows:
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the thrilling fifth film in the Monsterverse series and sees the legendary Titans Godzilla and Kong team up to face a world-ending threat so terrifying that neither could survive alone.”
The movie will see the return of prolific horror filmmaker Adam Wingard, having previously directed 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong. Wingard’s long-time screenwriter Simon Barrett will join the director, marking their fourth collaboration.
Alongside the title announcement, it was also confirmed that actors Brian Tyree Henry, Rebecca Hall and Kaylee Hottle will reprise their roles from Godzilla Vs. Kong, joined by a slew of newcomers to the series including Alex Ferns and Rachel House.
Collectively, the Monster-Verse films have grossed over $1.9 billion at the global box-office, with the figure set to rise considerably following Godzilla x Kong’s March 15th 2024 release.
