Despite only modest box-office receipts at the time of its release, 2000’s Ginger Snaps was a critical darling.
The teen werewolf horror quickly became a huge hit on the home video market, quickly making icons out of stars Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins.
The movie’s home media success and cult status spawned two sequels. Ginger Snaps: Unleashed, and Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning were shot back-to-back in 2003, before a 2004 release.
Since then, Ginger Snaps has gone quiet as a franchise, despite recurring rumours of a possible television adaption.
In 2020, it seemed we’d get a television spin-off, with Sid Gentle Films and Copperheart Entertainment joining forces to bring it to fruition. Original director John Fawcett was also attached, musing at the time that Ginger Snaps was perhaps more relevant than it had ever been.
However, that was six years ago, so is Gingers Snaps still capable of a comeback?
Recently, director John Fawcett spoke on the status of the property, and if we’ll see the Fitzgerald sisters return.
According to Fawcett:
“That is still very much a hot topic right now. It’s a passion project of mine. It’s a work in progress, but it’s been a long and winding road.”
Fawcett concluded:
“There is some heat, and some creative minds working on this as we speak.”
Fawcett refused to be drawn on whether or not Isabelle and Perkins may return, or if the television project would act as a reboot.
However, it appears the project is still very much in the works. So, we’ll keep a close eye on all things Ginger Snaps related and bring you any further updates as soon as we can!
