Legendary actor and genre regular Udo Kier has died.
Born in Cologne, Germany on October 14th 1944, Kier had an eventful introduction to life. The hospital where Kier was born was bombed by WWII allies. Kier and his mother were subsequently dug from the rubble, with his father dying in the blast.
At the age of 18, Kier moved to London to study performing and learn the English language. Spending time in Cannes and Rome, Kier supported himself via modelling work, whilst befriending several influential European filmmakers.
1970 would see Kier begin his screen and genre career with a bang, starring in Mark of the Devil. The historical horror tale met with immediate controversy due to its shocking violence and true to life claims.
This would set a pattern that Kier would follow for the rest of the decade, appearing in controversial but culturally significant horror films. These would include Flesh for Frankenstein, Blood for Dracula, and Expose, all of which ended up on the infamous video nasties list. Kier would also appear in Dario Argento’s classic Suspiria in 1977, beginning a lifelong friendship.
Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, Kier would carve a niche working with critically lauded cult filmmakers. These included Gus Van Sant, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Walerian Borowczyk, and Christoph Schlingensief.
The actor’s critically lauded turn in 1992’s My Own Private Idaho resulted in Kier entering mainstream Hollywood. Kier would subsequently appear in significant movies such as Armageddon, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Nymphomaniac.
Throughout everything, Kier remained loyal to the horror genre, appearing in countless genre projects including 1998’s Blade, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, and Shadow of the Vampire.
In a career consisting of over 250 film and television credits, Kier dabbled in everything from voice work, to serial drama, to hard-hitting documentaries.
Throughout his prolific career, Kier became somewhat of an icon for LGBTQ+ viewers, as the actor was open about his homosexuality from the very beginning. Furthermore, Kier frequently selected projects that dealt with similar topical issues, including 1992’s My Own Private Idaho.
Udo Kier passed away in Rancho Mirage, California on November 23rd 2025. He leaves behind his long-term partner Delbert McBride. A cause of death has not been issued at the time of this writing. Udo Kier was 81 years old.
Rest easy, Udo.
