Gary Dauberman, who is the writer of the hugely successful It and Annabelle: Creation has been hired by Paramount to write a film adaptation of Are You Afraid of the Dark? You may remember the original series from the 1990s, which hailed from Canada and told various spooky stories across its anthology format until it came to an end in 2000.
It wasn’t a particularly scary affair – not if you were older than 14 – but, I remember being chilled by some of The Midnight Society’s stories as they sat round a camp fire in the woods. Even though the show was geared towards a young audience, Dauberman hopes that the will be darker and scarier:
“The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honour the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really ground-breaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves.” .
Gary Dauberman has also written the script for Corin Hardy’s The Nun, so look out for that on 8th July 2018. He will also be writing the anticipated sequel It: Chapter 2.
