Unquestionably, Curry Barker’s Obsession is the most successful genre release of 2026. As it stands, the movie has grossed $505 million worldwide, over five hundred times its meagre budget.
Now, news has broken that Focus Features intends to give Obsession the ultimate push, and will mount an Academy Award campaign for the movie.
Reliable sources report that Focus Features intend to submit Obsession for consideration in every major category.
This includes three possible nominations for filmmaker Curry Barker, who will be submitted for consideration in the best director, original screenplay, and film editing categories.
Alongside Barker, stars Michael Johnson and Inde Navarrette will be submitted for consideration for the Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
Similarly, Cooper Tomlinson, Andy Richter, and Megan Lawless will vie for nominations in Supporting Actor categories.
Altogether, Focus Features are submitting Obsession for nomination consideration in 16 categories, including Best Picture.
Preliminary voting for the 99th Academy Awards begins in December this year, with the final nominations to be announced on Thursday January 21st 2027. The ceremony will take place on March 14th 2027.
Should Obsession garner Oscar nominations, the movie will continue the burgeoning trend of horror catching the Academy’s attention. For years, the genre was largely ignored by the Hollywood elite, but recent years have seen a shift, with movies like Get Out, Sinners, and Weapons taking home awards.
We’ll cross our fingers that 2026’s biggest horror hit gets the recognition it’s entitled to. Should Obsession garner any awards buzz, we’ll let you know.
