The first trailer has finally arrived for Scott Derrickson’s (Sinister, Deliver Us From Evil) Doctor Strange and it looks mind-bending as it bursts at the seams with sci-fi elements. This trailer may be easy on the horror, but there’s definitely a supernatural thread running straight through the centre of the story.
After being crippled in an accident, neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) meets The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) who teaches him to protect the world from evil using mystical arts. The trailer shows a focus on the Doctor’s origin story with a tiny peak at Mads Mikkelsen’s unnamed character and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Benedict Wong.
The atmosphere and tone present in is this trailer is very different from what we’ve seen from Marvel before, which gives Doctor Strange a much-needed edge that is missing from previous superhero films. We know that comic book film adaptations love to focus on gritty realism, but Doctor Strange feels like a gritty UNreality as it encourages us to “forget everything that you think you know.” Filled with mystery and intrigue, this trailer is perfectly enticing and has got us excited to see more from Benedict Cumberbatch’s strange doctor.
